The censor board has banned a documentary on the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, citing an order by the Union home ministry and setting aside a Delhi High Court ruling to clear the film for public exhibition.
The board, in a response submitted today to the court, said the Centre had found the film "very provocative" and had "reservations" about it.
The Calcutta office of the Central Board of Film Certification had first refused to clear En Dino Muzaffarnagar (Muzaffarnagar These Days) after which filmmaker Shubhradeep Chakravarty had sought a review.
However, a revising committee of the censor board as well as the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal too found the film very "provocative".
