Less than a month after the Supreme Court allowed a petition filed by actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth against a non-bailable warrant issued in relation to a sedition charge filed against him by Tamil Nadu authorities, Common Cause, a citizens’ body, has petitioned the SC to review the use of sedition law as a political tool.

This comes in the backdrop of the Bengaluru police registering a case against Amnesty International for organising a debate on issues related to Kashmir. And, calls on the Supreme Court to remedy the repeated misuse or misapplication of Section 124A (Sedition) of the penal code by central and state governments.
