Manipur media shuts down to protest threat to scribe

No newspaper hit the stands today as the journalists in Manipur ceased work yesterday to protest against the threat on the life of a district correspondent of a popular local newspaper.

Members of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU), a major scribes body in the State staged a sit-in demonstration in Imphal yesterday as part of showing solidarity to the agitation launched by Churachandpur district based Manipur Hill Journalist Union(MHJU).

In response to a joint call made by the AMWJU and the MHJU, the State�s newspapers and news channels shut down en-masse on July 22 against this threat to a colleague. As a result no local newspapers hit the stands today.

MHJU observed cease publication of district newspapers indefinitely from today following intimidation to S Singlianmang Guite, Churachandpur district Correspondent of the The Sangai Express by an armed group Hmar People�s Convention (D).

MHJU president Th Thanzalien in a release said three armed persons identifying themselves as cadres of HPC (D) intruded into the residence of the correspondent on July 20 morning and threatened him in connection with the publication of a news item in his Imphal-based English daily The Sangai Express.
