NEW DELHI: Having enjoyed an extraordinarily successful run in Kolkata's cinemas in February this year, Utsav Mukherjee's Bheetu has hit the wall at a screening in Delhi.
Bengal Association, self-appointed arbiter of what's appropriate viewing for Bengalis, felt that Bheetu does not serve the purpose of promoting "bhalo Bangla culture." And when the association decided about 40 minutes into their own Sunday screening that the film on abuse and stalking wasn't appropriate, it was apparently the general secretary of the association, Tapan Sengupta, who unilaterally downed curtains on it. Now, the audience - Mukherjee says it was 100-strong, the association's estimate is half - itself disagrees and is livid about the decision.
