The Maharashtra government has decided to look into the University of Mumbai's decision to withdraw Rohinton Mistrys two-decade-old book Such a Long Journey from its second-year BA Syllabus.

The university decided on the same after Uddhav Thackerays son Aditya and the Shiv Senas student union objected to the contents and references to the Sena in the book.

Minister for Higher and Technical Education Rajesh Tope said he would check with the university and look into the matter personally. I do not know why the decision has been taken and what was objectionable in the book.

The university had withdrawn the book as optional subject of Indian literature about a month ago.

Defending their objections, Abhijeet Panse, president of Senas student wing Bhartiya Vidyarthi Sena (BVS), said: The book contains extremely foul language and objectionable references to the Shiv Sena. Aditya Thackeray came to know about this.

Eunice DSouza, former head of department at St Xaviers college and a novelist, said: The book is two decades old and it is disgraceful on the part of the administration to take such a decision.
