he Bombay High Court today ordered the state government and others to file their reply within three weeks in connection with a civil defamation suit filed by the Girls Islamic Organisation (GIO) of Maharashtra, linking it to terrorist tendencies. A civil defamation suit, filed by Secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Maharashtra and Zonal presidents of Girls Islamic Organisation of Maharashtra against the state government, Police Commissioner of Mumbai, Additional Police Commissioner Naval Bajaj, Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Shintre, Principal Secretary to Home Ministry in the Government of India and Maharashtra, Director General of Intelligence Bureau and Director General of Police of Maharashtra, for trying to link GIO with terrorism and the leak of internal circular of Mumbai Police to the media. The suit was filed after Marathi daily 'Saamana', the party mouthpiece of Shiv Sena, on March 30, 2013, published a letter issued by Mumbai Police, in which IB had alerted the Mumbai Police that GIO was indulging in terrorist tendencies by imparting teachings of Quran and Sunnah. Following the publication of this letter, JIH Maharashtra and GIO Maharashtra responded immediately by filing a defamation case in the High Court, demanding Rs 10 crore from the concerned departments. They also pleaded to the court to order an inquiry about the leakage of police circular and punish the culprit.
