Following the deaths of two AIADMK functionaries from sun stroke during chief minister J Jayalalithaa's election campaign at Koothadipalayam, Salem district, on Wednesday, two journalists, attempting to take pictures of the victims' families, were attacked by AIADMK functionaries.
According to Gangavalli police, two journalists, P Sivasubramaniam (Nakkheeran) and A M Sekar (Dinakaran) had gone to the residence of Periyasamy, one of the deceased, to gather news. "R Elangovan, chairman of Tamil Nadu State Head Cooperative Bank, and his supporters, allegedly attacked the journalists," police said. They also said that the AIADMK functionaries damaged Sekar's camera worth Rs.2lakh.
Sekar also sustained injuries and was rushed to the government hospital in Attur for treatment. He lodged a complaint with Gangavalli police based on which they registered a case against Elangovan and two others under section 506(1)( Punishment for criminal intimidation), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) of IPC. Meanwhile, K Periyasamy, 39 and V Ravichandran, 47 of Gangavalli lodged a complaint with Gangavalli police against journalists Sivasubramaniam and Sekar for abusing them using their caste names. The police received the petition and forwarded it to Salem district SP G Subulakshmi for further proceedings.
