The editors of Hindi magazine Dastak, Seema Azad and Vishwa Vijay, were arrested by the Special Task Force of UP police for alleged links with Maoists.
Azad, also a state executive member of the Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), wrote consistently against the forcible acquisition of land for the Ganga Expressway project by the Mayawati government and against illegal mining activities in Allahabad and Koshambi districts.
The arrests have been criticised by civil liberties groups.
