CHENNAI: Chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday filed a criminal defamation case against Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president E V K S Elangovan for making "malicious statement" against her in a television programme telecast by a private channel.

City public prosecutor M L Jegan filed the complaint before the principal sessions court here on behalf of Jayalalithaa.

According to the complaint, Elangovan, in an interview telecast on April 30, 2016, made defamatory statements against the chief minister in a matter pertaining to appointment of vice-chancellors in state universities. Elangovan had said the chief minister and the Governor had committed irregularities in the appointment of vice-chancellors.
Last week, Governor K Rosaiah filed a defamation case against the TNCC president for making such remarks.
