Restrictions on airing of riot-footage on Godhra verdict day

With a view to maintain communal harmony, Panchmahal district collector has issued a notification imposing restrictions on the broadcast of any footage related to 2002 Gujarat riots on February 19, the day the Godhra train carnage judgment will be pronounced.

Notification issued by collector Milind Torawane says "restrictions" have been imposed on the broadcast of riot-related footage by the electronic media, and a breach will lead to prosecution under Indian Penal Code.

The notification bans public rallies and functions between February 19 and 23; not more than four people can gather at one place in the Panchmahal district during the period. No weapons would be allowed to be carried.

The Godhra judgement is slated be pronounced on February 19, by special judge PR Patel, in Ahmedabad.

On February 27, 2002, 59 persons, mainly kar sewaks, were burnt to death after a mob set fire to S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express near Godhra railway station.

Communal riots broke out across the state following this, claiming lives of over 1,000 people
