Justice A P Shah, retired Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, will head the Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), which will look into complaints by viewers against any programming on the television channels.
The Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF), which has a membership of 42 broadcasting groups running around 270 television channels, also announced that it had approved a Self Regulatory Guidelines and Complaints Redressal Mechanism for all non news channels, including general entertainment, children and special interest channels.
The working of the BCCC and the Code is expected to come into effect from 1 June.
Interestingly, this is the same Code that had been drawn up at the initiative of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry in 2008 but with suitable modifications.
As per the new guidelines, programmes will be categorised as either G for unrestricted viewing or R for mature audience programming (can be telecast between 11 pm and 5 am). The Ministry had late last year directed such programming to be brought in after 10 pm.
