The Mumbai police today cracked the case claiming that underworld don Chhota Rajan was behind the murder of senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey, even as they remained tight-lipped about the motive.
Heres how the police got hold of the killers who stalked Dey before he was shot dead on June 11 at Powai.
The murder was planned by Rohit Thangappan alias Satish Kalya at the behest of Chhota Rajan. Kalya is a known shooter of Rajan gang and has worked for him earlier too. Crime Branch sleuths first picked up Kalya from the temple town of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu. Based on his interrogation, the other accused Anil and Abhijit were picked up.
Their interrogation revealed info about others. One person was arrested from Solapur and others from Mumbai.
Police said they had seized the murder weapon and 10 mobile telephones from the gang. Police were initially met with dead ends and disappointments. Bikes and a Qualis used in the operation was also seized.
All the seven arrested in the case were produced before a local court which remanded them in police custody till July 4.
Police said they dont have the answer for a motive for the incident yet. MCOCA will be applied on all seven accused.
Dey never complained about threat, neither did he tell anybody close about threat perception.
Police scanned more than 3,000 emails and activated human and technical intelligence to crack the case.
The accused went to Solapur, Sangli, Bijapur, Madurai, Rameshwaram, Shirdi and Gujarat. They went to religious places.
