Bijbehara town and adjacent areas observed a complete shutdown to mourn the killing of Mohammad Abdullah Ganai.

Ganai, 60, had received a bullet wound in his leg after an altercation between the army men and locals broke out in Bijbehara market on Monday.

He was referred to Bone and Joint hospital in Srinagar where he was operated upon. Ganai was shifted to SKIMS Soura for post-operative treatment where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday afternoon.

All the shops and schools remained shut in and around Bijbehara town while traffic plied normally through the highway. Mobile internet was also shut throughout the day which was restored in the late afternoon.

Ganai, a butcher by profession, is survived by his three sons and two daughters and a wife. All his children are unemployed while only one of his daughters has been married off.

Ganai, whose body was draped in a Pakistani flag with a Kalima Taiyabba written over it, was laid to rest in his native village of Hussanpora Arwani in Anantnag district, amid pro freedom sloganeering.

According to one of his customers, Ganai was collecting payment at the time of the incident.
