The police have been ordered to submit a report within two days on the speeches made by MP Sanjay Nirupam, MNS chief Raj Thackeray and Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi.
"The police will examine the recent statements made by political leaders. The police report will be forwarded to the law and judiciary department for its opinion. This process will be done in two days. The future course of action will be decided on the outcome of the report," home minister R R Patil said on Friday.
A senior home department official said the police will examine the speeches made by political leaders in the last fifteen days. "Legal opinion will also be sought on whether these leaders can be booked under section 153 (promoting enmity between different groups)," the official added.
At a function in Nashik, Nirupam had stated that north Indians could bring the city to a halt.
