Amaan Farooq, a photographer with Greater Kashmir, was shot at on the leg by Deputy Superintendent of Police Safdar Samoon. The latter was reportedly incensed that the journalists had been allowed in to the spot of an encounter, where police had been engaged in an operation against alleged terrorists in Lal Chowk for over 22 hours.
The journalists were allowed into the area after Director General of Police, Kuldeep Khoda announced that the 22-hour gun battle in the area had ended. They began clicking photographs as the police had allowed them access to the spot. However, they were in for a rude shock when they encountered the wrath of the police officer. He reportedly drove them away, slapped a journalist, Yawar Nazir, and then, without warning, opened fire on a retreating Farooq, shooting him in the leg.
The entire incident was captured on a video camera and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reportedly ordered an enquiry into it.
