As a mark of protest against Sopore police, journalists from print as well as electronic media protested in front of the office of the SSP Handwara on Monday morning.

Carrying placards with the slogan, “Stop harassing media”, the journalists were protesting the thrashing of fellow scribe from Hanwara, Javed Zargar while on his way from Baramulla to Handwara.

Zargar was stopped by police at Watergam and manhandled after he told the police that he was a journalist.

Soon after the incident, Zargar called IGP North and SSP Sopore, but no action was taken against the earring police officials.

“It even doesn’t happen even in emergency. It is murder of democracy,” Yaya Sultan, correspondent ETV said.

Shamim Abdulla, correspondent with Zee news, said the police action was highly condemnable.

“We think police is for our safety, seniors should build this confidence among public,” Shamim said.
