There is no record of sedition cases filed against individuals who supported a particular team in a cricket match, Minister of State for Home Hansraj Gangaram Ahir informed the Lok Sabha while responding to a Parliament question.
Giving out details of sedition cases registered across the country, he said the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) does not maintain specific details about sedition cases filed for supporting a cricket team.
In Madhya Pradesh the police arrested 15 people on sedition charges for celebrating Pakistan's victory against India in the final of the cricket Champions Trophy. In Karnataka, four Muslim youth were arrested for the same reason under sedition charges.
According to NCRB data presented in the Parliament, 35 sedition cases were registered across the country in 2016.
Of the 35 cases, Haryana with 12 cases was at top, with six in Uttar Pradesh, three each in Karnataka and Kerala, and two each in Maharashtra, Telangana and Delhi.
