The district administration imposed a prohibitory order under section of 37 (1) of Bombay Police Act in Karanja, a small town in Washim district, some 350km from Nagpur in the western part of Vidarbha on Sunday.

A clash had broken out between two communities after a local youth uploaded a tampered photograph of a mosque on Facebook.

According to reports reaching Nagpur on Sunday evening, a couple of youths of the town who were surfing the internet on Sunday morning in a cyber café first noticed the picture of the tampered mosque uploaded by Gajan Roy. The news immediately spread like wildfire.

Tension prevailed in the market area of the city when a strong mob set several two-wheelers and a couple of cars afire and damaged at least five shops in protest. The protestors were demanding the arrest of the boy and a stern action in this connection, reports said. However, no one was injured in the incident.
The agitators even pelted stones on police that led to use of mild force by the cops to disperse the warring groups. Traffic was disrupted on Akola and Washim roads for hours due to the clash.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Mahadeo Tamade, the superintendent of police (SP), Washim informed that an additional police force was deployed in the trouble-torn area.
"I am camping at Karanja and supervising the law and order situation. The situation is now totally under control," he further claimed.

The boy who uploaded the tampered mosque pictute in Facebook was arrested by the police.
