Gauri Lankesh, a critic, writer, journalist, activist and the editor of Lankesh Patrika was shot dead on 5 Sep by two unidentified bikers right outside her house. She was an active critic of the right-wing Hindu extremism and often condemned the caste system followed in India. For her fearless criticism and writing, Gauri was considered to be a writer who always criticised Hindutva politics and had often received threating calls by unknown callers for her fearless writings.
Recently similar threatening calls have been reported by three other journalists and the police are taking probe into the complaints. Three journalists complained to the police that they have been receiving messages and calls from an unknown phone number threatening their lives. They also said that the caller would often say that they would also face the same fate like Gauri Lankesh.
The Delhi police have registered one First Information Report (FIR) and two Non-cognizable Report (NCR) and the cyber cells are also ordered to investigate and track the caller.
Delhi police spokesperson Madhur Verma said that “we initiated the legal process to register an FIR based on the complaints by the journalists immediately after we received the complaints. The cyber cell has been asked to probe each complaint.
