Hurriyat-M chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was on Friday placed under house arrest while Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Mohammad Yasin Malik was arrested so as to prevent them from leading protests against braid chopping incidents.
A posse of policemen arrived at the Nigeen residence of Mirwaiz and placed him under detention, a Hurriyat-M spokesman said.
Earlier, JKLF chief Yasin Malik was also arrested from his residence in Srinagar.
A spokesman of the outfit said that a police party raided the Maisuma residence of Malik and took him into custody.
“Malik was arrested to prevent him from leading protests against unabated braid chopping in Kashmir,” he said.
Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz and Malik had called for protests after congregational Friday prayers today against the braid cutting incidents.
Owing to the apprehensions of violent protests today, the authorities had also imposed restrictions in parts of the city.
