A local journalist was attacked and seriously injured by four armed men here in central Maharashtra, police said today.

Sanjay Malani, who works for a national news agency and also a local newspaper, was attacked by the unidentified persons, who had covered their faces, last night, they said.

Malani and his journalist-friend Abhimanyu Gharat were going to their newspaper office from district civil hospital on a two-wheeler at 10.30 pm when a person stopped their vehicle in Subhah Road area of the city.

Soon, three more persons arrived at the spot on a bike. The four pulled Malani off his bike and assaulted him with sharp-edged weapons and ran off, police said.
The scribe, who received serious injuries, was admitted in a private hospital, they said.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Gharat, police have registered a case against the assailants under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder) and others.

The reason for the attack could not yet be ascertained.

Local media persons strongly condemned the incident and submitted a memorandum to the District Collector demanding the culprits be arrested as soon as possible.

Collector Sunil Kendrekar said stern action will be taken against the assailants. "I spoke with Superintendent of Police Dattatray Mandlik and asked him to ensure that the attackers are arrested at the earliest," he said.
