Social media is equating to social media monitoring. From governments to brands everyone today understands the importance of social media monitoring and each one wants to monitor according to their needs. Mumbai Police has been one of the police forces in India which had earlier inaugurated its"Social Media Lab" (SML) in the month of March, with the aim to keep tabs on the sentiments and activities happening on social media.
Now we have been informed that the Mumbai Police is going to use the tool provided by SocialAppsHQ for its SML. The department became more serious with social media after its failure to handle the Palghar case that took place last year where two girls were arrested for their Facebook posts. The Mumbai Police is the first police department to implement such a monitoring process. The lab has been set up in association with Reliance Foundation and NASSCOM with the intention to have proactive policing and to have better intelligence gathering since information spreads faster on social media.
It was also informed during the SML launch that 20 trained policemen would be working in shifts and their major task would be constantly monitoring content on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The trained staff would be monitoring content and whenever they come across objectionable content they would inform the cyber cell of Mumbai to take it further. To monitor such huge data, the Mumbai Police has decided to use the social media monitoring tool provided by SocialAppsHQ, which would sit on social media and pull out content that could be troublesome.
Quite excited by the new opportunity, Rajat Garg , CEO at SocialAppsHQ expressed,"It"™s an honour to work with Mumbai Police and provide them with a comprehensive product with advance analysis capabilities that will enable India"™s first social media lab by police forces. In countries like India, social media monitoring initiatives are necessary to understand the pulse of nation and we are happy to see that organizations in India are starting to take action."
Monitoring social media has become a crucial activity but is it also thinking of creating an active and engaging presence on social media? I did a small search but failed to find any active presence by Mumbai Police on Facebook. Along with monitoring, Mumbai Police should spend some time trolling the Bangalore Police social media presence and take inputs on the proactive initiatives being carried out constantly.
