The Worli police are probing a complaint about a Facebook page that carried offensive pictures of Hindu gods and derogatory comments about another community. The page, which is now blocked, was created to incite communal hatred ahead of the festive season, say the police.
The complainant, a Worli resident, and his acquaintances had approached the police on August 3, stating that they had come across an FB page where in morphed photographs of Hindu gods and derogatory comments about a community were posted. Following this, a complaint was lodged.
"The complainant had given us the link of the page that contained objectionable contents. We have blocked the page. Lots of festivals are approaching and hence we suspect that such pages are being created with the intention of creating communal tension in the city," said an officer of Worli police station. The cops have sought the help of cyber crime cell to track down the miscreants.
The police have registered a case under section 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code and section 66 A (sending offensive, annoying or threatening email, SMS or MMS) of the Information Technology Act against unknown person.
Last month, a similar complaint was lodged at Azad Maidan police station wherein inflammatory content was posted against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria on Facebook. The page also contained offensive posts and photographs against a particular community. Cops had blocked the page.
In May, morphed photographs of Hindu gods, Shivaji Maharaj and a late political leader with derogatory remarks triggered protests in some parts of the state. During that time, a Muslim youth was beaten to death in Pune. The case is also being investigated by cyber crime cell.
