Doordarshan claims its satellite channel is the most
watched in Punjab
SALIENT FEATURES OF THE FIELD SURVEY ON DD-PUNJABI
CONDUCTED AT JALANDHAR, LUDHIANA, AMRITSAR & PATIALA BY THE AUDIENCE
RESEARCH UNIT OF THE DOORDARSHAN KENDRA, JALANDHAR
A field survey was conducted at
Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Amritsar & Patiala, the major cities of Punjab to
assess the reactions of the viewers on DD-Punjabi Programmes and the programmes
telecast by other satellite channels. The field survey was conducted by the
Audience Research Unit, Doordarshan Kendra, Jalandhar.
A sample of 200 Cable TV households was randomly selected covering cross
sections of the society at each of the four places. The salient features of the
study are as under:-
1. A field survey was conducted at four places viz. Amritsar, Patiala,
Jalandhar & Ludhiana covering a sample of 800 Cable TV Households selected
randomly
2. The sample consisted of 49% Males & 51% Females in the combined sample
of 800 respondents.
3. The combined viewership of DD-Punjabi Channel was reported to be 84%.
4. 13% respondents did not view DD-Punjabi Channel in the combined sample due
to one or the other reasons.
5. As regards comparative viewing of DD-Punjabi with other Punjabi Channels
available on satellite, it was found that DD-Punjabi obtained the top position
having 84% viewership in the combined sample. The viewership of Lashkara,
ETC(Pb), ALPHA(Pb) & TARA Channel was 32%, 24%, 20% & 9% respectively
in the total sample.
6. The highest viewership(53%) was recorded in respect of movie/feature
films/tele films in the total sample.
7. Quiz type/Brain games programmes of DD-Punjabi channel attracted 46%
respondents in the sample.
8. Other programmes liked by the viewers were Lishkara(Punjabi Folk Songs),
Punjabi News, Saugat(Old & popular songs, Chitergeet (Films Songs),
Play/Serials, Khas Khabar Ek Nazar, Shabad Kirtan of DD-Punjabi Channel.
9. Viewership of Punjabi News of DD-Punjabi Channel was reported to be 54% in
the combined sample.
10. Time chunk of 8.00-10.00 AM gained the highest clientele of 73%, who use to
be DD-Punjabi Channel for their favorite programmes.
11. 48% viewers were of the opinion that DD-Punjabi provides healthy
entertainment, whereas 29% adjudged that its programmes are very informative.

OWNERSHIP OF COLOUR TV
The ownership of colour TV in the combined sample was as high as 93%.
