Editor of Himal Southasian and publisher of Himal Khabarpatrika, Dixit was detained around 7:45 p. m. Monday. According to his family sources, plainclothes policemen who had been waiting at his home at Patandhoka tookhim away saying the "Superintendent of Police wants to talk to you."

Dixit then drove to the police station in his own car. His wife who went to the police station in Jawalakhel where he was being kept wasn`t told the reason for the detention nor how long he would be kept.

But within four hours, authorities seemed to have changed their minds and released him at around midnight Monday. Talking to Nepalnews Tuesday morning, Dixit said police inquired him about his recent Delhi sojourn and if he had met or tried to meet Maoist leaders there. Dixit said he told them that he did not have any such intention.

Dixit had returned to Kathmandu on Saturday after taking part in a number of academic discussions in New Delhi and Kolkata.

The veteran journalist said police treated him well while in detention and that he was kept along with Nepali Congress leaders Arjun Narsingh KC and Jagat Raj Shakya.

Rights groups and media organisations including the Federation of Nepalese Journalists protested the arrest of Dixit.
