In a bid to tackle “the control of internet by one or two countries”, Iran is said to be in the process of creating a domestic internet system by March 2013. Official announcements of blocking Google and Gmail have already been made. Most Iranians believe that the ban was related to the recent anti-Islam movie and use of social networking sites in anti-government protests after the “disputed” re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad in 2009. Whether Iranians will be able to access global internet services after the implementation of the domestic system remains to be seen. (REUTERS)
