After the Rajasthan government tried its infamous ordinance to restrain media coverage of cases of corruption of public officials, the Telangana government has gone a step further: it has decided that local police can file FIRs under Secs 506 and 507 of the Indian Penal Code (dealing with punishment for criminal intimidation and criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) against anyone who "uses harsh words" about the government. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti
decided to make both sections cognisable, so offences can be registered without prior court sanction.
