Trial begins for defamatory tweet

IN Media Watch Briefs | 04/02/2018

Rising Kashmir reports that the trial has begun in the criminal defamation case filed by its Editor-in-chief against social activist Madhu Kishwar. She appeared via video conferencing in the Tis Hazari Courts in Delhi as permitted last year  by the  Supreme Court. The case is being tried in a local court in Srinagar.  The paper says Bukhari  has sought criminal proceedings under Sections 499 and 500 of the RPC for defaming the complainant through her tweets in July, 2016 and on December 2, 2016. Among other things  Kishwar had alleged that Bukhari's newspaper had received “funding from agencies” and was playing the “ISI script”.
