Victory in sexual harassment case

IN Media Watch Briefs | 08/03/2013

A former journalist of  The Statesman, Kolkata, has been awarded reinstatement in service and full back wages after her plaints of sexual and professional harassment were upheld by an industrial tribunal. Rina Mukherjee, employed with the paper in 2002, had claimed that she was sacked because of her verbal complaints of sexual harassment against the news coordinator. The Statesman said Mukherjee was terminated for incompetence and that  the allegation of sexual harassment was an afterthought. But the tribunal  faulted  the newspaper for rubbishing the complaint without  an inquiry and for the haste with which she was sacked.
