Jaipur, Jan 26 Driven by the repeated telecast on TV of a self-immolation bid in Punjab, a man in Rajasthan tried to set himself on fire and sustained severe burn injuries. The incident occurred early Wednesday in a village in Jhalawar district, some 300 km from here, police officials here said Thursday.
Raees Khan, 26, poured kerosene on himself and then set himself ablaze in the same manner as a petty trader in Patiala had done. The incident was widely shown by various TV news channels and the trader subsequently died Wednesday.
Hearing Khan`s loud screams, his family members and residents of nearby houses rushed to his rescue and took him to a hospital in Jhalawar. While the Patiala vendor had set himself on fire to highlight the plight of petty traders, there was no information on whether Khan was facing any problems.
According to Khan`s statement, he decided to attempt the act after watching the self-immolation incident on TV. He tired it late in the night so as to avoid any resistance from his family. Khan also admitted that he had made a mistake.
Nasima Bi, Khan`s mother, blamed the repeated telecast of the Patiala incident by TV channels for her son`s action.
