A backward step

Letter to the Hoot: The Deccan Chronicle’s insensitive coverage of the gay surrogacy issue shows up the newspaper in poor light.
GAUTAMI laments this lack of discretion
I am a student of Year I, M.A. Communication from University of Hyderabad and I would like to bring to your notice some unethical and indifferent reporting by Deccan Chronicle, Hyderabad.

The newspaper gave prominent space to the issue regarding surrogacy for a gay couple. I would like to point out some of the issues raised by the coverage.

I find the coverage unprofessional and unethical on many grounds. The main page of the city edition should have a news item and not a feature or an editorial.
The article also used judgmental words such as `cruel’ and `poor’ which is absolutely unacceptable.

Throughout the article the language and the tone are misleading and retrograde. It presents facts selectively without putting the whole issue into perspective. At a time when the country in moving ahead with respect to revised disability laws and repealing of Section 377, such an article from a well-known newspaper, just perpetuates the wrong kind of attitude.

The new term for self censorship is voluntary censorship, as proposed by companies like Netflix and Hotstar. ET reports that streaming video service Amazon Prime is opposing a move by its peers to adopt a voluntary censorship code in anticipation of the Indian government coming up with its own rules. Amazon is resisting because it fears that it may alienate paying subscribers.

Clearly, the run to the 2019 elections is on. A journalist received a call from someone saying they were from Aajtak channel and were conducting a survey, asking whom she was going to vote for in 2019. On being told that her vote was secret, the caller assumed she wasn't going to vote for 'Modiji'. The caller, a woman, also didn't identify herself. A month or two earlier the same journalist received a call, this time from a man, asking if she was going to vote for the BSP.
