Suing for damages

IN Media Watch Briefs | 22/06/2011
Arindam Chaudhuri of IIPM has surpassed his own previous record of lawsuits against those who write about his institute by suing The Caravan magazine for Rs 500 million for  “grave  harassment and injury”. Like a similar case against Careers 360 this one too has been filed in Assam. The magazine wrote a cover story on him which many more people will now access and read than would have been the case if Chaudhuri had ignored it. The magazine has said it will fight the case. The lawsuit is also against Penguin and  Google.

ET reports that streaming video service Amazon Prime is opposing a move by its peers to adopt a voluntary censorship code in anticipation of the Indian government coming up with its own rules. Amazon is resisting because it fears that it may alienate paying subscribers.

Clearly, the run to the 2019 elections is on. A journalist received a call from someone saying they were from Aajtak channel and were conducting a survey, asking whom she was going to vote for in 2019. On being told that her vote was secret, the caller assumed she wasn't going to vote for 'Modiji'. The caller, a woman, also didn't identify herself. A month or two earlier the same journalist received a call, this time from a man, asking if she was going to vote for the BSP.
