The flood that wasn’t

IN Media Watch Briefs | 03/07/2011
On June 30 TV channels started creating panic by airing that in next two days the  water level of the Yamuna river in Delhi was going to increase, as water was being released from the Hathni Kund barrage in Haryana. The water level of Yamuna had increased from 50 thousand to 1 lakh cusec. They did not say that upto 3 lakh cusec, is considered normal.  On July 1 the water level  came down to 26 thousand cusec. But Aaj Tak, News 24, Mh 1,  and Star News among others continued creating panic. On July 2 News 24 claimed the water released from Hathni Kund barrage of the Yamuna in Haryana was about to enter Delhi even as the water level of the HK barrage was down to 18 thousand cusec. Some channels used video clips of a breach in a canal named Dadu Pur Nalvi to hype their story. (From a correspondent in Yamunanagar)

The new term for self censorship is voluntary censorship, as proposed by companies like Netflix and Hotstar. ET reports that streaming video service Amazon Prime is opposing a move by its peers to adopt a voluntary censorship code in anticipation of the Indian government coming up with its own rules. Amazon is resisting because it fears that it may alienate paying subscribers.

Clearly, the run to the 2019 elections is on. A journalist received a call from someone saying they were from Aajtak channel and were conducting a survey, asking whom she was going to vote for in 2019. On being told that her vote was secret, the caller assumed she wasn't going to vote for 'Modiji'. The caller, a woman, also didn't identify herself. A month or two earlier the same journalist received a call, this time from a man, asking if she was going to vote for the BSP.
