News websites are the single largest source of news for youth according to a small, self selecting sample of 170 respondents who took the survey. This was followed closely by newspapers and newsapps. Facebook’s instant articles came fourth, and television news channels a poor fifth.
The Hoot’s online survey of the media habits of youth shows that for those who access news on a device, mobiles are the single most used device, at 44.8 per cent. The laptop comes next (32%) followed by TV sets (16.7 %). The survey was conducted online in April-May 2016.
Overall the survey shows that newspapers still rank high among young newsreaders, but TV is losing its audience in this age group. Google News is substantially behind Facebook instant articles as a source of news. Although Twitter was not listed as a news source option, 20 percent of the number who took the survey mentioned it in their comments as one of their news sources.
Other interesting findings: news is consumed all day by the majority of respondents (69.4 %), In the morning by 22.4 per cent and at night by 8.2 per cent.
While those who took the survey had multiple sources of news , as many as 73.5 per cent of all respondents reported reading newspapers. Marginally over 50 per cent of these said they always read beyond the headlines.
National, international news and politics rank high among the categories of news preferred by all those who took the survey.
Information on the respondents who took the survey is as follows:
